A thread - A comparision between DDLJ & YJHD. I will tell why I feel philosophically YJHD is a superior movie than DDLJ. It has nothing to with the entertainment quotient (which can be subjective). I'm just discussing the philosophies of the respective movies.
1. I have always believed these two movies represent two Indian generations. One from a generation which just began to realise the meaning of dreams and other from a generation which understood what dreams are. Despite that, both movies end up giving the same message ironically.
2. Raj & his father have a strong bond. Bunny & his father have a typical love-hate relationship. Raj doesn't have goals in his life, since he is rich. Bunny doesn't have the intellect in academic field and his goals are more creative in life & they are everything for him.
3. Simran is girl who is something else in front of her parents and something else when she is away from them whereas Naina is yet to find herself when the movie begins and is an introvert for larger part of the movie.
4. Whereas in DDLJ the beauty of the movie is that the guy is willing to stay and claim his love rather than run with her, in YJHD it is the contrasting personalities of the two characters that make the story engaging.
5. There is a shift, from ideals of love and family values in one movie, to ideals of love and dreams in another and this shift is what I feel properly represent two Indian generations. But the ideal of love was triumphed the other ideal in both the cases. Why?
6. The maine reason DDLJ's impact was so big that love had become a vital plot point for almost every movie since then. Such that, a movie that was supposed to be about dreams and the value of choosing your dreams needs to use plot point to make sure it is the perfect recipe.
7. This is one reason why I have felt that lessons taken from DDLJ were always wrong and also why I feel how flawed the ending of YJHD is but YJHD gives out a better idea than DDLJ despite the same underlying message in the end. The idea of dreams over many things in life.
8. Bollywood has always had the habit to not leave the status quo easily. Even if they are trying something different & I believe YJHD was fresh try in the romantic genre, they simply cannot move away from their tendency to prefer love over the actual values in life.
9. In the end, I'll say follow the YJHD model of choosing your dreams and not the DDLJ model to prioritise love over everything because not everyone can be rich as Raj but there is a Bunny in almost everyone of us.
