I often get asked, "How do I get more followers on Twitter?"

My answer is "I promise; You don't really want that"

I hope this thread leads to good some unfollows [thread]
First, let's just consider the immutable fact that some percentage of Twitter users are bad actors. Lots of free time, looking to be upset or quarrel, happy to misconstrue

As followers goes up, the fraction is constant and the raw number of bad actors increases
Second, you want to be followed by people who care about what you want to tweet about. I admit I don't always understand the unique pairings of some accts, but this is like a TV with many channels.

You don't want to be CNN in the airport
You want to be ESPN for a 🏀 fan
Of course you want to be followed by the right people. Engaged with your interests. Otherwise who cares if you reach folks indifferent to your interests.

Mine are Evidence, medicine, cancer drugs, trials, epi and policy and you rarely find me outside that
Third, you soon can't reply to all comments even good ones. Sometimes you miss when people talk to you. After all, you can't waste too much time online. But as followers increases this happens more and more
Ocassionally IRL someone is offended you missed their tweet! It's not personal. I don't even read it all!
Fourth, people feel as if they know you, when they actually have never met nor know anything about you.
Fifth, folks place demands on your time. Tagging you on a million things. As @adamcifu says 50% of my time is muting threads.

I wish I could block being tagged in a block of 3 or more accts
Sixth, as I have discussed with others like @RogueRad before. Twitter has changed a lot in last 5 years and much less interesting. Much more dull and... I won't say more lest I rile the mob
Seventh, there are folks who disagree with you on one topic and then make it personal and all encompassing;

These can be frivolous academic topics, but they will never see that. Last episode of @Plenary_Session on this topic
Eighth, every week someone will say 'look at you, the person with XX many followers'. Haha, as if you value the saddest accomplishment in the world

A few cat videos and you can have 200k followers. Who cares?
In short, Twitter is best with the 'right' followers and a manageable amount of messages. It is less fun after that. So please unfollow. You have my blessing! And trust me, you don't want more followers. I want less! (3,2,1 reply... U mean fewer?)
PS. I often mute my own threads and I should preemptively do that here
Oh, one last thing about wrong followers is someone comes along and doesn't get the sars-cov-2 since 2017 joke! Haha Humorless! Worse they keep arguing that line
