They are not too young to talk about race.
Today I’m especially talking to my Asian American folx. How often do we train our children to believe they are “almost white”? How often do we use our children as pawns of white supremacy?
I’ve heard SO many friends and colleagues over the years say their parents even told them they were “better than white” while at the same time expecting them to conform and assimilate to whiteness. All this does is perpetuate a hierarchy of race.
All this does is perpetuate anti-Blackness.
We as Asian Americans have been used as a wedge for too long. It erases the trauma of our own communities and multiplies that trauma. It excuses and enables the trauma of Black people. If (as 1 step) we do not talk about this with our families, our children, we remain complicit.
