Been trying to avoid this platform and *intend* to do so again but I want to have some sort of a say on this. This is good news for a lot of people who have been greatly anguished and inconvenienced for the last few months and as such should be welcomed but there are a few facts https://twitter.com/rtenews/status/1266381999536771072
That should be faced up to as well. We have today restored the Irish Public Health Service to being the system with the lowest ICU/bed and consultant capacity in Europe, at a time of unprecedented challenge, facing into an enormous backlog and massively diminished capacity for
Inpatients and outpatients coming from a frankly pathetic starting point. There is no roadmap as yet for the reopening of public outpatient clinics or routine surgical or diagnostic
procedures, so all the people who can't afford private health cover, who have spent the last 3
Months being patronised and told "we're all in this together" and "Hold Firm" and all the rest of the Bullshit, can now take their seats back at the rear of the bus. They're still locked out of their healthcare, and like they do every winter when "routine" work gets cancelled in
most places for basically the whole month of January they can just suck it up and deal with it. I congratulate the people who have campaigned for this deal to be cancelled. They had a righteous case and they pursued it. I can't help but wonder though why exactly it is that people
in vast swathes of medicine and politics can't summon up the courage to advocate so passionately for public patients. Sure we'll see what happens. Personally I worry. We couldn’t manage the way things were. Now we are going to have hugely diminished inpatient and Outpatient
Access and a half year of pent up demand at least. I’m sure the NTPF will be roaring no doubt, throwing good money after bad and providing a massive cash injection to recession-proof the private health industry when loads of people cancel their insurance in the upcoming recession
Good luck to them. In Ireland there are always winners and losers and we have people who are brilliant at figuring out ways to end up on top. Guess I was just hoping the poor might chalk up a win for once.
