PM Trudeau is speaking now about what is happening in the U.S. He's noting that Canada also has discrimination. We have work to do as well, in our system. I call on all Cdns to stand tog in solidarity. To know that people are being affected by what is happening in the U.S.
re-watched/listened to (now available) video on CPAC. Here is my transcription of exactly what PM Trudeau said, from the beginning of this particular section of his speech (see next comment for beginning of thread)
1/
PM Trudeau, at his press briefing this morning, finished with this important message:
“I just want to make a quick point on what is happening in the United States. Many Canadians of diverse backgrounds are watching, like all Canadians are, the news out of the United States
2/
(PMJT cont’d) with shock & with horror. Anti-black racism, racism, is real, it’s in the United States but it’s also in Canada. And we know people are facing systemic discrimination racism, unconscious bias, and anti-black racism every single day. We need, as a society,
3/
to stand together, stand up against discrimination. Be there for each other in respect. But also understand that we have work to do as well in Canada in our systems that we need to work forward on, & I call on all Canadians whether it’s anti-black racism or anti-Asian racism
4/ (end of PMJT's speech)
or racism discrimination of any type – to stand together in solidarity, to be there for each other and know just how deeply people are being affected by what they see on the news these past few days.”
