This week has really been mentally heavy for me because as an educated black woman I know when I’m pulled over or have an encounter with the police all they see is the color of my skin. They don’t know and don’t CARE about my life! 1/
They don’t care how hard I worked my ass off to become a doctor. They don’t care about my accomplishments and accolades. They don’t care about my commitment to serving my community. And they truly DO NOT care about my black family. Why doesn’t my black life matter???? 2/
In February, I was pulled over in Loundon County, Va. My first instinct was to call my sister just in case something happened to me because it was dark outside and we all know that within a split second I could’ve been killed. 3/
When the officer approached my car his hand was on his weapon already in a defensive posture. The first question he asked me was “what am I doing in Loundon County this late?” I told him I lived there and was headed home from an academic conference which was in DC. 4/
He instantly became aggressive and didn’t believe me. Mind you, Loundon County is the wealthiest county in America. I had to show him my license, work badge as well as conference badge in order for him to stop questioning me. 5/
I was literally 5 minutes away from my apartment but because of his disbelief that I, a black woman, could live in Loundon County could have been killed while my sister listened. So again I ask why doesn’t my black life matter????? 6/6
