I have admittedly a shitty memory, but I feel like I see a lot more people reacting to and trying to support BLM right now than I did during the Baltimore riots and that’s a good thing, to me that means a lot more people are “waking up” (for lack of better words)
I was in college v close to the city at the time, and the impact of those riots was felt across the campus. They organized rallies, and a lot of students participated in protests later on throughout the week. But I also saw a lot of people refusing to support BLM on the grounds
Of being against looting. While I did support BLM back then, I admit I also wasn’t happy about that aspect. But I talked to a lot of students, listened to a lot of different perspectives, and learned a lot about history in an attempt to fully understand. I have much better
Understanding now, and I can only try to explain what I learned to the people irl in my life that are still ignorant or still spouting racist things about the situation. It doesn’t feel like I’m doing much, I think a lot of people can relate to feeling helpless in this situation.
But it’s much better than sitting and doing nothing at all. Maybe I can’t donate because I don’t wanna pull money from my emergency fund, but I can spread links for others. I can also sign petitions, make phone calls, spread information. Idk where I’m going with this thread but
Idk, it just makes me much more hopeful this time around to see how STRONG of a reaction there’s been on Twitter this time. I hope people keep this energy up. I hope it makes some sort of change, and I hope more protests break out across the city even despite the pandemic.
