1) This is an actual crisis, or more accurately, an interrelated series of crises - pandemic, economic, and political
2) The people who are supposed to respond to these crises lack the imagination to even grasp the scale of the issues at hand

Not to turn all of this into an argument for the importance of historical perspective, but I promise you that it can always - always - get worse
