Thread:

At a time when Chennai is recording a high surge in number of Covid-19 cases, instead of being sensitive, private hospitals are fleecing patients.

We got several complaints from patients about this and that's why we decided to do a status check. Here's what we found:
We visited 3 prominent pvt hospitals in Chennai to understand how patients are exploited.

Hospital 1:
Advance amount- Rs 50,000
PPE kits per day- Rs 10,000
Deluxe room including other charges- Rs 70K- 80K per day
Ventilator- Up to Rs 1.25 lakh per day https://twitter.com/TimesNow/status/1266350882188230656
Hospital 2:

This hospital gives Covid19 treatment packages. There is a Rs 3 lakh package and other packages depending on the room. And if the patient needs ICU, advance of Rs 1 lakh need to be paid immediately. They were out of ICU beds when we visited. https://twitter.com/TimesNow/status/1266350942691057664
Hospital 3:

Rs 15,000- Rs 16,000 per day for a room.

Advance amount of Rs 30K- Rs 40K. Separate charges for PPEs.

Asks us to keep Rs 1-2 lakh ready for treatment.

One patient who was admitted for 24 hours was charged Rs 1 lakh. Bill copy attached.

Now listen to the testimonies of kin of Covid19 patients and a patient himself about how they were overcharged by the private hospitals.

Govt hospitals are overwhelmed and pvt hospitals are overcharging. Stuck in between are patients. https://twitter.com/TimesNow/status/1266353566165299200
Here, @Ahmedshabbir20 shows some more medical bills of Covid19 patients who were taking treatment at private hospitals.

One patient was charged over Rs 60,000 for PPEs.

Another patient paid Rs 2.25 lakh for 9 days & room rent was Rs 25,000 per day. https://twitter.com/TimesNow/status/1266352080924499968
Dr Rex, President of Tamil Nadu Health Development Association has called upon the state govt to cap private medical charges during this pandemic situation. https://twitter.com/TimesNow/status/1266358068725428226
Several patients have taken to social media to complain about pvt hospitals overcharging. Several media organisations have also highlighted this. Yet the state govt has still not intervened. This is a pandemic. It should not be an opportunity for pvt hospitals to mint money.
