I know lots of people say abolish the police but let’s be real: that is never going to happen. Even if it somehow did, all you’d get is Police 2 at some point.

I mean what would replace them? You think everyone is just going to go to a mediation when they are wronged?

You can blow up the system as it is, sure. But you’re gonna have to rebuild a similar one.

The first, obvious step is to get rid of police unions.

Let their pay structures and benefits be fought for by a labor organizer. But there should be no bargaining over things like rules of conduct. That’s asinine.

Next step: demilitarize. End this idea of a war on crime. I understand this may increase the risks for officers but at a certain point it must be understood that that is simply part and parcel of being law enforcement.

We have created a culture of Judge Dredds. Great for movies and comics, bad for actual enforcement of law. The utmost duty of officers should be to protect and preserve others, not fight crime.
