This is still Blur's greatest song. It's literally unlike any song I've ever had. The way that the vocal sounds slightly fuzzy, the way that it all hangs together in the intro with Graham's guitar sounding like nothing else before...mesmerising.
This is the only Blur track I can think of that actually palpably takes me somewhere different when I listen to it.

I think The Universal is the best Britpop anthem, better than Common People even...the kind of nobly bruised melancholy throughout this track sets it apart.
It's just so liquid and otherwordly. I know that Justine found it trite, but honestly for me The Universal is earnest in a way that endears it to me. (In fact, the entirety of TGE is 'earnest'. I feel like that suits it well.)

This song really captured something. I love it <3
the lyrics are perfect. i really like how simplistic they are. the song isn't trying to be witty or coruscating. and that makes it so, so much more powerful.

that explosion at the end is the cherry on the top. this song, for tomorrow and common people are the best of britpop.
basically there's an innocence to the universal. that sets it apart and makes it something special.

damon really nailed it here.
ALSO THE BASS IS REALLY HARD TO HEAR
dave's drumming is pretty good. subtle and carries the track along nicely.
