Seen some people use the tag #AllLivesMatter, so whilst #BlackLivesMatter is trending (and rightfully so), I think it’s important we remember that AllLivesMatter is not only NOT an effective way of showing solidarity with black people, it is also ANTI-BlackLivesMatter. A thread-
I don’t wanna draw any more attention to the wrong hashtag so I’m gonna abbreviate it to ALM from now on. When people say #BlackLivesMatter , it does not mean only black lives matter or that white lives don’t matter, it means that black people are being oppressed-
and white people are not. This is then fair to say that black people need the attention on them, so that they are able to feel just as supported and just as valued as their white counterparts, not more valued but JUST AS valued, a level playing field-
I saw a post on here which describes it well. Imagine there is a street with two houses, one house is on fire (black people), and the other house is not (white people). Rushing to help the house that’s on fire does not mean the other house does not matter-
It means it does not need the support and attention like the house on fire does. And everyone in the street should scream and shout about it until the house is no longer on fire, this would save lives right?. This is the same as white being not being in danger for being white-
So please don’t use the ALM hashtag- do you really think it’s right to discredit the centuries of oppression and struggle experienced by black people all over the world? DON’T say ALM because all lives cannot matter until #BlackLivesMatter .
If you’ve never had to fear for your own safety just because of the colour of your skin, you are PRIVILEGED, if you are white and you are able to not engage in these conversations because you don’t have to care about them you are PRIVILEGED, remember that everyday.
I apologise for the typo further up in this thread. I meant to say white *people* are not in danger due to just being white.
