Understanding White Privilege: A Thread

To begin:

#BlackLivesMatter What happened to George Floyd was barbaric, inhumane and deserves retribution. It was a crime against the black community, and it was a crime against the foundation of morality that defines our species.

Here's why this is a problem: he was murdered by someone whose duty it is to uphold the law, not to take it into their own hands.

When your Caucasian friends are being choked out at the side of a street by black police officers, then we can talk about how #AllLivesMatter.

The only unique perspective I can give to this is that I'm an Irishman who grew up during "The Troubles". I know what it feels like to be afraid simply because of your birthright. Bombs went off on streets I travelled though

I still have privilege, despite this. Here's why.

I am still here. They are not.

My PAST experiences don't suddenly invalidate other people's CURRENT experiences.

Your past suffering doesn't make it okay for you to dismiss the suffering that's occurring on your doorstep. THAT is privilege: the freedom to ignore it.
