CNN reporter @OmarJimenez just got arrested by Minnesota state police live on @NewDay with no explanation. This is the most extraordinary moment of TV news I’ve ever seen. The camera man and producer are now being arrested.
The camera is being carried away by police.
Police claim they’ve been arrested because the reporter and producers were asked to move and they didn’t. There’s no evidence of that on the broadcast.
VISION: Omar repeatedly identified himself as a reporter and said he will move where they want him. They ignored and arrested the lot of them. I cannot process what I’m watching.
Let me be clear, @OmarJimenez and his team did EXACTLY what they’re supposed to do. They had identification, they repeatedly said where they work, they complied with police orders and were ready to move per police orders. They were arrested for doing their job. It’s unacceptable.
VISION: The moment @OmarJimenez and his team of CNN producers were arrested live on air.
Statement from @CNNPR:
. @JohnBerman reporting CNN President Jeff Zucker has spoken to Minnesota Governor @GovTimWalz. Walz says the arrest was “inadvertent” and the crew will be released imminently. Waiting for an update.
CNN crew and @OmarJimenez released from police custody, Alisyn Camerota.
Ever the professional, @OmarJimenez is back on CNN, reporting live: as is his job.
Here’s @OmarJimenez explaining his arrest on @NewDay.
This tweet from Minnesota State Patrol seems to suggest they weren’t aware the CNN crew were from the media. Omar was speaking to a TV camera, with a microphone, he had media ID and identified himself. This is not good enough. https://twitter.com/mndps_msp/status/1266338580596690949?s=21 https://twitter.com/mndps_msp/status/1266338580596690949
