A short thread about a really crazy eraser recipe. I meant to post this a month ago, but what is time anymore?
The ingredients for this include sulfur and whey. I really had no idea what to expect.
While combining, I had the most bizarre sensation that the contents of the mortar were diminishing as I went. I could hear a faint hissing, too. Which I should have expected really, as there is soda in there and vinegar is used for mixing.
With absolutely no idea to what extent this was supposed to happen, I moved on to the next step which was to "make an acorn" and let it dry.
The result is synthetic pumice! A gently abrasive eraser to get ink off parchment. I MEAN.
Also the first instance I know of, of using a chemical yeast-type reaction (soda + acid) to create air bubbles in a substance. This is what we do to bake a fluffly cake.
It takes some practice to get the amounts just right so that the eraser can do its job. Mine was slightly too brittle to rub anything with, because I used fresh whey. I discovered later that whey was usually dried for later use. So I had too much liquid. Still, how cool is this?
