We appreciate the great interest and enthusiasm around ease of doing business in Ethiopia. It is very encouraging to see the active engagement and robust discussion on the subject. Few clarification points around the questions raised are highlighted below: (1/7) https://twitter.com/nigigebi/status/1265627024258928640">https://twitter.com/nigigebi/...
Requirement of rental agreement as proof of physical address is eliminated . The Ministry of Trade & Industry no longer demands it. We acknowledge that there remains disparities in implementation as the Ministry of Revenue still requires rental agreement for TIN issuance. (2/7)
Other onerous competency requirements such as employment of staff, acquisition of capital goods etc were required from all businesses in the past. Substantial reform has been made to this regulatory requirement. (3/7)
Competency requirement is, therefore, now limited to few business activities deemed sensitive in light of public health, safety and other overriding considerations. The number of business activities eligible for competency requirement has reduced from over 1350 to 52. (4/7)
Profitability is not a requirement for business start up. In the past companies that exhausted 3/4 of their registered capital were required to block 50% of their capital for renewal of their business license. This is no longer the case. (5/7)
Businesses that undertook commercial registration were required to process business license within a year. This requirement has been removed. Please check Commercial Registration & Business Licensing Amendment proclamation No 1150/2019 and Amendment Regulation No 461/2020. (6/7)
