I am about shamefully admit something, but bear with me, it’ll get better
A few years ago, I believed in the “movement” all lives matter, I also believed it was disrespectful to kneel during the national anthem, and I wondered why Black people said the N word if it was so hurtful

I truly believed that those were the most humane or “right” beliefs. HOWEVER, throughout the years I have taken several college courses that discussed discrimination, history for POC, racism, and how racism is still alive and well today.
After every lecture I was enlightened and moved, but also disgusted to learn about the struggles that POC face today.
It’s not your fault if you grew up in a household that didn’t have to discuss race. But it is your fault if you don’t take it upon yourself to learn.
Education truly goes a long way. If you have the opportunity to obtain higher education, take those classes that teach these topics even though, to you, it might seem “uncomfortable.” Learn WHY your discomfort is an issue.
At the VERY LEAST, educate yourself beyond what you see on social media. Instead of scrolling through Twitter or IG, scroll through articles that discuss these issues, listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Do. Something.
If you cannot distinguish the difference b/w basic terms such as prejudice, discrimination, racism, & privilege then that is a problem. Search the history of the N word, learn about environmental racism, teach yourself about why Black women experience high infant mortality rates
^^^^ those are only a FEW of the topics. And, frankly, don’t even touch the surface.
I’m not an expert or perfect, and there’s still SO much more for me to learn. But a few years ago I was uneducated and literally did not know any better.
I am thankful for what I know now.

I also learned that remaining silent about these issues to refrain from
1. political talk
2. “getting involved”
3. friends or family getting upset
4. coming off annoying
Are all wrong and also cause harm

Lastly, it is not the responsibility of your POC friends to teach you their race or culture’s history.
It is YOUR responsibility.
It is YOUR responsibility.
