I’ve got a lot of thoughts about this whole situation.
First and foremost, the 4 policemen involved in the situation that caused George Floyd’s death need to be brought to justice. They shouldn’t all get some sort of blanket sentence, but all must face consequences. https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1266231100780744704">https://twitter.com/realdonal...

People of color, and specifically black people have not been giving the same rights and securities as white people have in the US literally since its inception. It’s been ~240 years, and while progress has been undeniably made, there’s still miles to go.
To move on to the rioting/protests/looting. I struggle in this area. I believe in freedom of speech and protest as Americans and humans. But I also see the side of “peaceful protests haven’t worked.” Because it’s true. What have the peaceful protests done on the topic of race?
I saw multiple reports of people saying on Twitter that there was a Target in Minn. that refused to sell milk to protestors to help with the tear gas. From what I’ve seen, that’s what started most of the looting that has taken place. I don’t think either side is in the right.
To be honest, I’m uncomfortable even thinking of condoning any form of violent rioting or looting. But when I thought about it, we have glorified it in our country’s history. The Boston Tea Party? The rev. war in general? Those things are taught in schools as positive, and brave.
They’re portrayed as courageous acts by citizens standing up to oppression and injustice. In 300 years, if some form of riots lead to a dramatic shift toward a better society, will these events be looked upon the same way? I don’t have an answer.
I say all of this to provoke deeper thinking from both sides. Emotions run hot, and most people rush to defend whatever side of the political spectrum they’re on. That’s not how this should work. This is about our society’s humanity and safety, not “red” or “blue” allegiance.
As a conservative, I would hope you aren’t okay with the way our current president is handling this situation, and the tweet attached to this thread specifically. Him inciting violence and immediate shooting of protestors and looters is not the way to handle things.
As a liberal, I would hope you are not rooting for the murder of people on the other side. This shouldn’t be a murder for murder scenario. And putting innocent people at risk is not the answer either.
I hope we as a nation can come together to solve these issues. We need to be uniting, not dividing based on race, gender, orientation, religion, political preference or anything else. I want to live in country that makes its citizens feel safe, protected, and valued.
And to be crystal clear, I realize I say every single word of this from a place of unbelievable privilege. I’m a straight, white, male who has spent his entire life in small town Nebraska. I’ve never been faced any kind of real injustice in my life, and likely never will.
