I think @giles_fraser captures extremely well the discomfort I felt about the bishops pile-on about Dominic Cummings. It isn’t about whether DC was right or wrong or wherher bishops should talk about politics, it was about bishops being part of the mob. https://unherd.com/2020/05/theres-nothing-brave-about-the-bullying-bishops/
Christians have an unhappy history with the mob. It was mobs who cried for heretics to be burned (just outside my church!) and the church who condemned them and sent them out to the mob. Christian mobs have turned on neighbours for being Jewish or suspected witchcraft.
The terrifying thing about the Christian mob in history is that they always clothed themselves in righteousness. Saving the people from the corruption of the devil, witchcraft, and all the thousands of anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.
I think this is why the bishops’ joint attack on Cummings surprised and dismayed me: it struck at some deepseated fear of the church empowering the mob. and these two paragraphs by @giles_fraser are pitch-perfect.
