oooooh we gotta teach folks how to make/use tourniquets!
aight, last summer i leaned from a doctor on how you should assess bleeding injuries. i found my notes but they’re handwritten, gonna hop on my laptop
find the bleeding injury and then apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Cover and pack the wound with the cleanest cloth you can find. Apply pressure with BOTH hands
folks in this thread have posted makeshift tourniquets. a lot of folks carry them as well. after you apply it you should write the date and time if possible. tourniquets should not be left on for less than two hours, as folks with them need to be admitted to trauma ASAP
when you find the bleeding area please leave the clots. recognize that you may have to remove their clothes. a simple leg/arm bleed can end up in death.
compressions can stop major arterial bleeds. firm, direct and continuous pressure. you can show other people what you're doing and ask for help. you can use the shirt to pack the wound if it comes down to it.
apply the tourniquet 2-3 inches above the bleeding wound. tourniquets will limit blood loss if applied correctly, you must tighten until the bleeding stops. the person will be in extreme discomfort, as it will be very tight. DO NOT put it over knee/elbow joints.
DO NOT REMOVE A TOURNIQUET. ONLY PHYSICIANS AND PARAMEDICS SHOULD DO SO!!!!!
the doctor was in the military (ew) but told us if you don't have anything you can just drop a knee above the wound until other options become available
