Kumanjayi Walker, a 19 year old Indigenous Australian, was shot in front of his family and girlfriend by policeman Zachary Rolfe in November. It was declared as murder but Rolfe was suspended on full pay and was granted bail. He deserves justice too. #BlackLivesMatter
I know we’re talking about what’s happening in America but I really wanted to bring light to what happens in my country, considering a lot of ppl from aus are talking about America’s situation but won’t talk about Australia’s history with racism.
When it came to shooting the young man, Constable Rolfe lied and said that Walker stabbed him when in reality Rolfe already had the stab wound before barging into his house.
Walker’s death is added to the long and shameful list of the police killing Aboriginal people. In September of last year, an Aboriginal woman by the name of Joyce clarke was shot by the police.
Over 400 Indigenous Australians have died by the hands of the police since 1991 when the “Royal commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody” finished.
Today Aboriginal people are jailed at a higher rate than at the time of the commission. Aboriginal people are 2.2% of the Australian population but account for 27% of those in jail, 19% of deaths in police custody and 22% of deaths in prison. (Taken from http://thesocialist.org.au )
Australia isn’t new to racism. Having been built on racist ideologies with their White Australia Policy that only ended in 1973 along with the Stolen Generation that foreseen the removal of Torres Strait and Aboriginal children from their families and placed in gov agencies.
