I mean in all seriousness, people whose primary concern was the death of innocents on a huge scale were hounded and abused in public, do you not think this might have contributed to the degradation of the public conversation?
(Similarly, if you accept that a debate about benefits is a debate about scroungers, and a debate about immigration is a debate about cheating parasites, then down the line the public conversation is grim and debased and careless of human life. Isn't it?)
Most of all, it degrades the public conversation to have it conducted by people like Alastair Campbell, shouting the odds every day as if he had no questions to answer and nothing to do with how we got here.
