I'm making this thread about the situation that is happening in Hong Kong. #StandwithHK #StandWithHongKong
I made a thread last year explaining what hong kong and china relationship and what they are. And explaining about the beginning of why there was a protest and about the extradition bill. but a lot has happened since https://twitter.com/mistxxke/status/1154223252077608962?s=20
also for my fellow Americans when you're going to do further protest PLEASE read this thread for your safety. https://twitter.com/jjkisbabie/status/1266107074649354241?s=20
a short story about the whole extradition bill it has been withdrawn in oct of 2019. however, the hong kong protestors have 5 demands that need to be made. 1. full withdrawal of the bill. 2. a commission of inquiry into alleged police brutality.
3. retracting the classification of protesters as "rioters" 4. amnesty for arrested protestors more than 5K have been arrested. 5. Dual universal suffrage, meaning for both the legislative council and the chief executive
police brutality such as harming especially kids and high school students. journalist. police have also arrested a regular 10 year old boy who was just going out shopping with his mom. Many gas tears have been thrown to incident citizens and many inside their apartments.
protest also started to happen in HK airport where they would show showing foreigners the truth about hk. such as someone being shot in the eyes by the police. Then it started the police and protestors attack at the airport for a few days till the ban people going in the airport.
after the bill protest. on oct 1 which is national day where there was a mass protest and violent conflict occurred. carrier invoked the emergency regulations on imposing a law ban on wearing masks in public gathering if you are wearing a mask during the protest you be arrested.
Causing a larger vandalizing shops which were pro-beijing from the protestors. Then they started to use blue dyed water to spray on protestors on identifying the protestors however also harming the muslims community as they wear at their regular location doing their business
A wide city strike started on 11 nov and during one of them a police officers shot an unarmed 21 year old 5 times but the officer claimed "he tried to grab his gun".
polices started to occur in universities such as CUHK and PolyU were a major conflict occurred where they started to storm the campus in PolyU and arrested many protestors. PolyU being in lockdown by police. around 1000 people were arrested.
When the COVID-19 crisis started to happen the protest started to die down. many were made that carrier lam wouldnt close the border from mainland china because of the "very close relationship" where hospital staff started a strike on closing it.
When the case numbers weren't high and that it kept hitting 1 or 0 most days people started to protest again. On May 10 mother's day many have been arrested for "breaking the corona ban"
now it has brought us to the biggest problem the national security law. On the 21 May - the standing committee drafts a new law on covering secession, foreign interference, terrorism, and subversion against the central government. into the HK basic law.
a similar law concerning china's national security failed in 2003 following a massive demonstration against the bill.
many considers this was China's BOLDEST step to bringing Hong Kong under its control by destroying the one country, two systems, Which would effect HK freedom of expression and future economic success
24 May the largest protest since the pandemic occured on going against the National Anthem Bill and security law.
28 May the standing committee passing the national security law.
the day before US informed that HK was no longer autonomous from china.
In short terms, china killed hong kong. Removing our freedom of speech, expression, etc. going against what they promise with 50 years without changes but instead, they only gave us 23 years and said fuck you to hong kong.
till to this moment, there are still protest going on. MANY police brutality still happening, tear gases being thrown, many armed police being deployed. many pepper spray being thrown.
