/ Not all students are aged 18-22, nor are they all freefrom risk, as some have underlying conditions that could be seriously compromised by exposure to Covid. Should they stay at home and receive fewer benefits for the same fees?
/ If schools/childcare facilities remain closed or operate with lower capacity how will the many staff (not just lecturers)who are required to ensure universities operate be able to get to work? Should they bring the kids?
/ Academics entered this profession for a reason. We love teaching and the interaction with students. We hate the impersonality of the current situation and miss our students and colleagues. Of course we want to return, but only when safe.
/ Where will the students live, or should this access be a privilege for those who live within commuting distance?
/ How will we manage library access?
/ Further to points re childcare and the ‘non-traditional’ students - what should students who have children do? Some students are carers for vulnerable family members - should they put them at risk, or stay home and not get benefits of classes?
/ And finally if anybody thinks universities at all levels from VCs/Presidents down are not grappling with how to provide the best service possible, in the safest way possible, those of us who work there can reassure you that we all are doing so.
PS: to any students following. You might be tempted to defer entry etc, but do think hard about it. We have many resources at our disposal and will do everything in our power to maximise your experience.
