While part of me agrees we want to see de-escalation, I think we (like-minded partners) need to be aware of the risks in de-escalating with China. https://twitter.com/nktpnd/status/1266251905333817345
The CCP has reneged on compromises in India, the South China, and now Hong Kong. Repeatedly, the CCP has shown itself to be a predatory regime, inciting conflict then taking advantage of states negotiating in good faith.
So I, for one, am not holding out for compromise or de-escalation. Using "appeasement" seems to be out of vogue, but China will keep pushing its bayonet anywhere it doesn't see steel. It's past time for meaningful consequences.
We, the United States, however, find ourselves lacking moral/capable leadership at the most inopportune juncture I can imagine.
