I’m having a lot of friends and allys ask what they can do about systemic racism and the injustices that result as of it. Here us my take: (Thread)
Yes, awareness is an action. Good on you. Asking me what you can do is amazing. Truly.
We are going to have to have uncomfortable conversations about race, and we are going to need organized action and advocacy.
That is going to take time. In the meantime there are actions you can do.
You can read and self educate!
You can vote, and volunteer to get out the vote.
This means informed votes in local, regional and national elections.
You can support reparations for black, indigenous and people of color.
You can support other groups that have been historically marginalized. Women, the disabled, LGBTQUI+ and those in overlapping historically marginalized positions
This means supporting BIPOC businesses, institutions, and individuals.
Buy BIPOC products, goods, and services.
Talk about white fragility. Investigate your own privileges, and biases. (We all have them—me included)
Retweet and share BIPOC content and posts that you feel need attention, and you can use your privilege and access to signal boost.
Connect to your own lineages, do ancestral work. Find mindfulness, religious, or spiritual practices that work for you.
And BUY BIPOC, art, literature, design, poetry, plays, films, television, cuisine, crafts, and more!
Or pre-order Great Force, a book of contemporary artists unpacking and dismantling racism in art and the world https://icavcu.org/visit/shop/
This is ground breaking, but we need more than that and more than this rant. But it’s a start.
