A thread!
it's interesting how some cultures & countries have a tradition of pre-modern crime/detective fiction (novels, stories, plays, etc), while others don't. the Western & Arab/Islamic worlds have had them since the Mediaeval period.
i can't comment on N/Central/S America as i know nothing about their literary traditions.

the two great literary traditions of Asia are, of course: the Indian Subcontinent and China. China has had crime fiction since the 9th c. or so, but India didn't until the 20th c. why?
in this thread i'll be exploring some thoughts on this and adding more over time.

Western and Islamic world whodunits give you suspense, revealing the culprit at the end.

Chinese whodunits reveal the criminal at the start, with the story serving to show how it was done.
