My son is black. I am sick, heartbroken, numb, outraged, lost. This is an extremely overwhelming time to be alive.
My mind is preoccupied with fear about adequately raising my black son as a white mother. Will I raise him with enough love for his skin? Can I keep him safe? What trials will he face? What comfort or understanding will I be able to offer? What more do I need to learn?
I am frozen by the overwhelming feeling of powerlessness. I’ve signed petitions from a screen on my phone. What will it really do? If I go out and hold a sign on our quiet streets, what will it really do? When I vote but the electoral college overpowers me, what more can I do?
Something that troubles and alarms me is that social media is now seen as activism. News flash: change doesn’t occur from fighting with each other online about who’s the better ally based on what they’ve tweeted.
Here’s some actions I’ve found to take that serve more purpose than an angry tweet. Please, put action behind your twitter fingers:
1. Make it a voting issue in your area. Contact your reps and find where they stand on these issues. Tell them your views and ask that they act.
2. Donate. There are resources available that make it possible to donate to bail funds for those who have been arrested while protesting. https://bailproject.org/
3. Join a protest. Check your local Facebook groups to find something near you.
4. Participate in petitions to remove and try bad cops. Contact the affected police stations. Demand justice.
5. Contact your city council about a local citizen review board to track police conduct, like the one created in Ferguson, MO years ago to promote transparency. https://time.com/3308579/ferguson-citizen-review-police/
This is not an exhaustive list, so please add to this thread if you have found other ways to be proactive. #BlackLivesMatter
