i have a lot of feelings abt everything going on right now but i’m gonna leave it at this for now: YES it is important for people with a platform to use it for “good” but absence of posting on social media doesn’t implicitly mean that people don’t care or aren’t contributing-
-in whatever way they see fit. people do what feels right to them in the capacity that they can at the time they can, and maybe you think they aren’t doing enough but you don’t know what they might be doing just bc they aren’t posting it on twitter or wherever else. it’s also -
-important to consider how sometimes people only speak up when something is “viral” and only bc they don’t want to be shamed for not siding w those they admire, or in some cases like w bands, for fear of ruining an image or losing fans. sure, speaking up is good, but that’s not-
-genuine and as many are saying, black lives matter ALWAYS and not just now bc it’s viral. that fact does not mind the recent injustices that have occurred in any way. i do not believe silence is an automatic indiaction of racism. that being said, it is important to speak up-
-and use your platform to make a difference in whatever way you can/ see fit. i’m proud to support many bands/people/etc who are using their platform to stand against injustices. i firmly believe IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO NOT CARE OR NOT THINK OR NOT TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS
but just because someone has this privilege does not make them a bad person for not speaking out. as someone studying bias, stereotypes, discrimination, and hoping to dedicate my life to social justice and diversity science, i am passionate about these things and wish everyone-
cared as much as i do. but not everyone will and i can’t force them to. so those of us who choose to speak out need to make a lot of noise but i can’t force people to do the same simply because i choose to. also i’m sorry this thread got so long aidbdodbrksbslsma
