my family was watching project runway and the person that got sent home in this episode was a black man-
(2/?) so my dad, a white man, decided to say "yea get rid of the black man." my mom, my sister, and i were shocked to say the least. and he says "what it was funny" etc etc and then he points to a black woman on the show and says-
"if she were to say it, people would& #39;ve laughed" and my 12 YEAR OLD sister says to my 45 YEAR OLD dad "dad, you& #39;re a cisgender heterosexual white man. you have more born privilege than anyone in this room and on that show, which is why no one laughed because you have nothing-
(4/?) to joke about" i, an almost 14 year old, had to explain to him what a cishet white man is. he invalidated our statement by saying that he& #39;s not privileged. having privilege doesnt mean you dont have struggles, it means there are things-
(5/?) that& #39;ll never be the reason for your struggles. my mom, who is a female immigrant from chile, said "well white men are in a tough spot rn" which my dad continued with "yea i feel like i cant make jokes cuz of stuff that happened 100 years ago"
i had to leave after that cuz i couldnt even process what was being said. the point im trying to make in this thread is that you never know who you live with. i didnt know my own parents felt this way. when i prepare a respectful way to educate them, i will. so be careful please.
