The police here barely respect the authority of the mayor’s office at all. They answer to their union.

Mayor Jacob Frey is AFAICT an ally — and the Minneapolis police federation now sees a target on his back. I’m sure the police view the rioting they incited as revenge not just against the community, but against the mayor and the city government.

“Fire one of our own? Fine. We’ll let your city burn.”

Know also that the Chief of Police is a mayoral appointment, and perceived as hostile by a significant segment of the force (both past chiefs and current). If you want to see their chosen leadership, look to their elected union president:
