have a safe protest, a thread.
if you can, take or watch or read a TRAINING on a) knowing your rights and b) civil disobedience.
IF planning to participate in CD, you need to be a part of an organized effort who has discussed it beforehand. Don't go lone wolf, it's unsafe and can hurt the protest and people.
IF planning to participate in CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE, check yourself. Will you put yourself at risk? Will you put someone you know or live with at risk? Only plan to participate if you are educated on CD, in loop with the game plan, and have the privilege to do so
Even if you're peaceful u ARE at risk for arrest. A lot of this thread deals w keeping you anon. Protest is lovely and empowering for being a part of a community, but be aware that your mere presence puts you at risk for being targeted. Delayed arrests may happen using photos too
A lot of original Ferguson protesters have been found dead. I know a lot of my audience is young, so I need you to understand that protest isn't a fun, trendy thing, it's serious af. Be mindful of how you present yourself and what you post online.
Go with someone. Choose a reliable person / phone number to contact in the event of arrest. If you don't have it memorized today, write it ON your body. Do NOT depend on your phone. Have a bail out PLAN.

Don't take your phone, or keep it on airplane. No data no tracking.
Let's talk about TEAR GAS.

COVER as much skin as possible, wear goggles

Wear gloves & pop the canister under a traffic cone or in a large bottle with 1/3 water, cover the top, shake gently to DIFFUSE.

Baking soda and water in a spray bottle can be used on skin to NEUTRALIZE
Your outfit needs to be functional & keep you anonymous

Wear a MASK to prevent germs and ID. At LEAST wear a bandana on you in case things go south and you need to mask up.

LONG SLEEVES = no ID and protection from tear gas.
Don't wear contacts. They make tear gas worse, and GLASSES help prevent ID and protect your eyes. Ski goggles if you know it'll turn violent.

Wear a HAT for coverage. Wear a HOODIE with drawstring hood. People sometimes wear hardhats for protection too.
Stay aware of your surroundings.

People with red crosses on their bags or fit are MEDICS. Read http://riotmedicine.net  while you're at it. Get first aid training. Be ready.

Does someone need help? Is that a plain clothes cop? Stay aware, stay kind, care for those around you.
At the least watch first aid youtube videos including how to flush eyes. Stay prepared.

Take CASH, don't risk losing a card or getting tracked.

Pack SNACKS. It will probably be a long day.
