Dupatta and modesty.
The concept of dupatta is so ingrained into the minds of women especially from smaller towns. For several years I used to wear it like a blanket wrapped around me. When the tailor Anna would ask for neck patterns I'd just laugh cos it never mattered. https://twitter.com/timbakktu/status/1265958221711323136
N then one day, I wore a nice looking dupatta just on the single side to which a friend (female) my age commented "oh you've dont have b00bs on the other side?". I went red and felt so insulted.
Today I look back at the incident and laugh. But I was hurt by what she said.
My paati was asking if the 'towel' that she puts on top of her nightie is nice enough. She steps out to the lawn next to our house for her daily walk.
I sat with her and explained to her that nightie is decent clothing and towel if anything draws attention. She is 86 ya FFS.
I've come a long way. I still have my own hang ups about dressing a certain way. People say I wear Sarees like a teacher, but that's purely my taste and not social conditioning. I'm glad that at least now women have the choice to be the way they want to be.
Long way to go.
