If you truly wish to understand what is at stake in Ladakh border with China, you can do no better than read this brilliant, pithy & insightful analysis by Lt Gen @rwac48.

It is a sharp, rich, piece worth rereading a couple of times to get its depth.

2 quick points to note about @rwa48 analysis. Firstly, China is attempting to block India’s access routes to Ask Chin & NH 219 by its troops deployment as well as threaten supply routes to Siachen.
It has already secured the dominating heights for its forward positions.

Second, Chinese suspicions of our intentions in Ladakh flow from Amit Shah’s statements on the issue of Kashmir following abrogation of article 370 and creation of Ladakh as a union territory.
While @rwac48 leaves this point for you to read between the lines, note the following.

Our construction of the 2 roads to SSN began in 2007. Construction of another road 4 a southern approach to Ask Chin began in 2013. Chinese did contest these developments earlier but not on the scale as now. These roads are not new. They cannot by itself be reason 4 crisis.
Following Amit Shah’s statement in Parliament China lodged strong protests prompting EAM to visit China to reassure the Chinese that Amit Shah’s statement in parliament “raised no new claims.” Clearly the Chinese haven’t bought that obfuscation and created a situation 4 us.
Now we will either have to offer more concrete assurances to China - privately or in public - or fight to regain the domination heights as well as occupied territory. We have been left with no other choice.
Clearly this is not just another border “stare down” contest.

Note also that the area in play is patrolled by the ITBP, directly under Amit Shah in the MHA and not by the IA. As the @rwac48 notes, ITBP doesn’t report to the army command.
When U move 3 new brigades 2 an area after snow melts, as the Chinese did, ITBP failed 2 notice.

Does ITBP have a field intelligence setup in the border areas? Why did it fail to pick up such large scale troop movements?
Alternatively, does RAW surveil the area from the air with drones or have field intel capabilities? Did it alert ITBP and/or IA?
Clearly didn’t happen

The primary responsibility for securing that area, where Chinese now hold dominating heights, was that of Amit Shah and the MHA. Why did they fail? Especially as it was largely Amit Shah’s bombast & rhetoric that created all the adverse noise on Ladakh?
Aap chronology samjhiye.
When would the Chinese have occupied the dominating heights that over look the areas of intrusion?
Late February/EArly March?
What was Amit Shah doing then? He was crowing CAA-CAA and busy with pogroms in Delhi & toppling Govt in MP.

How many balls has Amit Shah dropped?
He ignored the Covid-19 crisis for partisan politics. He failed to anticipate the problems of migrant workers even as he made himself the Master of everything under the Disaster Management Act. And now her failed to notice the Chinese.

The man is a disaster by himself. His sole & only focus is on partisan politics - be it West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, or Maharashtra. He doesn’t let any responsibility as the Home Minister distract him from partisan politics.
Yet 4 editor uncles, he can do no wrong.

Do we have a border skirmish on our hands? Possible though I think by now we will be pulling every stop to reassure China that we have no designs on Askai Chin.
Will Chine buy? Remember they will go by capability & not our assurances.

As @rwac48 says the failure of intelligence, the role of ITBP and MHA in the fiasco etc needs to be examined at the very top.
We just cannot afford such laxity in dealing with the Chinese.
And ruling party needs to learn a few lessons in sobriety as well.
