as a black woman, i wanna speak on something i’ve been seeing since last night. “Black Out Day” was an idea to take place on the 31st, where only black people would be “allowed” to tweet. there’s a serious issue w/ this idea & it’s important that it doesn’t get spread further.

for starters, members upon members of the black community have expressed discomfort with this idea but the people organizing it continue to ignore these complaints. although the idea did stem from a black girl, she’s speaking on behalf of the entire community which isn’t okay.
participating in black out day would be extremely tone deaf & the exact opposite of what we should be doing to spread awareness. a day where only black people tweet ab something as serious as this makes zero sense given we need all the help we can get & silence is not an option.
the creator is also trying to turn it into a selfie day which is not only disrespectful to blm, but couldn’t be any further from what needs to be focused on. selfies bring absolutely no awareness & actually distract from the fact that an innocent black man was murdered by police.
promoting silence & posting selfies in “honor” of George Floyd is just not the revolutionary progression people are thinking it is. non black people who were spreading it, i recognize that you were simply trying to check your privilege but this is definitely not the way to do it.

also just found out that the creator of the idea goes by they/them so i want to correct myself and apologize for using the wrong pronouns. anyone addressing this please be sure to respect their pronouns when speaking on the issue.
