$FB vs. $TWTR (short thread)

- FB grows faster (27% rev growth vs. TWTR 14% in 2019)
- FB holds up better in downturns (FB flat in April vs. TWTR down 20+%)
- FB Is cheaper: FB is 23X 2021 GAAP P/E w/ lots of cash; TWTR 50X 2021 adj. P/E (GAAP EPS negligible)
- FB is more innovative (FB Live, IGTV, Shops, IG Shopping, Stories even if they stole this, Workplace, Payments?, etc.) vs. TWTR (Moments? Periscope, what else?). Honestly TWTR's product and development team and its productivity baffles me.
My CIO asks me about TWTR every 6-12 months. Every time I tell him FB is an investment, TWTR is a trade. The only thing to like about TWTR is that it is DUE but after years and years of not living up to its potential, can you really expect hits to come?
Easy things TWTR can do:
- Better Search (I waste a lot of time trying to find stuff I liked, sometimes I have better luck literally googling “Tweet search terms”)
- Show the best of (if I pull up someone’s profile, why can’t I see their most popular tweets)
- Better Ads (Not sure how TWTR targets me, but I rarely see an ad that appeals to me); FB is like magic sometimes
- Learn from GAMING/Twitch: Offer DLC to power users (Zelda BoTW, the DLC lets you see where you’ve been on the map), there are many opportunities:
- More Monetization products. If there was a “push this button, pay a dollar and get 2X views on this tweet” button. I’d probably push it a lot.
- See who's viewed your profile? Maybe make this a premium subscription product.
- Integrate long form BETTER that what is done now.
- Monetize off-platform usage BETTER. Every time a news article is written about a tweet. Charge for it?
- Monetize Popular people's tweets. Put an ad next to EVERY DJT, Elon Musk, Tom Brady (whoever) tweet with related content.
The list goes on.
