doesn't feel right to watch the Russell Simmons documentary without publicly mentioning that when I tried to cover some of the initial allegations against him, I had to delete my news report because he was "a friend of the network." this is what happens behind closed doors.
eventually, yes, coverage did happen. was it how i personally hope it'd be approached? absolutely not. was it enough? gonna vote no on that one. was that the first time i had to participate in an editorial meeting or conversation like that? no. was it the last? also no.
when you see allegations against powerful people being reported on, know that there likely could've been someone fighting for that coverage to happen in the first place, because there certainly are those who hesitate in the beginning and until all the other outlets move forward.
responsible reporting takes time, and i don't want social media to deter from that process, but when there are multiple sources and multiple accounts (more than a dozen women in this case!) to include or consider, that reporting cannot and should not be ignored.
