NEW: The corner where George Floyd died was designed to keep black people away. Dozens of homes there have deeds prohibiting black residents. Those deeds helped make Minneapolis one of the nation& #39;s most racially unequal cities. w/ @matt_furber @abscribe https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/28/us/george-floyd-minneapolis-protests.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/2...
To be clear, the deed restrictions were created when the homes were built a century ago. They are no longer legally enforceable, but they still exist. Check out @MapPrejudice which is identifying all of the city& #39;s homes w/restrictive covenants. https://www.mappingprejudice.org/ ">https://www.mappingprejudice.org/">...
Another interesting fact: Derek Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on Floyd, owns homes in Minneapolis & Florida & voted in Florida as recently as 2018, per public records. A criticism of Minneapolis police is they don& #39;t live in the city. Apparently some don& #39;t vote there either.
