I never believed we should play a certain percentage of “irish music” on radio, I don’t believe we should play a certain percentage of women either. I prefer to measure Denise & Soule & Erica & Tolu & Zali or whoever else, against artists globally rather than against themselves
Globally this stuff is pathetic; Rihanna has been pitted against Beyonce from the start, while women continue to be pitted v each other in a way that suggests there’s only room for a few. Some play up to it inc many rappers. But women aren’t a 20 or 30% of music or rap or rnb?
And Irish women shouldn’t be a percentage either. And irish music isn’t a genre. We should maybe measure our best artists v the best international ones rather than having some sort of token mentality. Anyway specialist shows do amazing work here. It’s harder daytime obv
I don’t have anything against the prevailing sound; which is generally white & male & Indie & rock, and as a white male myself I know how the game works. But there’s a whole new Ireland out there and I look forward to seeing these young women make strides in the next few years
Let’s see what happens. In the article I suggested we can all do better. And that includes me too
