Acutely feeling the mental dissonance required to be a journalist of color today
On one hand, we're committed to facts and the truth. On the other, we can't speak fully about certain facts or truths when they rub up against an outdated idea of "objectivity"
"Objectivity" in news was defined by the only people who were once allowed to have this job: white men. It has been warped over time into a weird "both sides" approach even when an issue is more complex
Not sure where I'm going with this, but it's been on my mind with another thing: Journalists of color are most often the ones working inside publications to make sure they're not racist, offensive or out of touch
And they don't often get paid more to do this on top of their actual duties (you know, reporting the news). So we're helping our own institutions be less racist, but we can't speak up to make sure others aren't, even if we're simply stating facts and patterns
All of this leaves me very tired and not very hopeful about the future, either for news or for people of color in this country. And that's without even mentioning the billionaire conglomerates decimating this industry.
This is all very bleak but that's where I'm at right now!
