If someone you know defends the cops who murdered George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, or any other Black person—ask them if they would be quick to defend someone who murders their brother, mother, or friend. I’m not sure how else to make people understand that #BlackLivesMatter /1
Imagine losing someone you love and having strangers rationalize their death, demonizing them by pointing to criminality and cops’ “fears.” If you wouldn’t want anyone suggesting your loved one deserved to die, you shouldn’t want that for Black lives. /2
If you want accountability for these deaths, but use looting as a reason to diminish the deservedness of justice—you should feel lucky that you don’t have to endure the ongoing pain of the Black community. Empathy should not be conditional. /3
