Why does it take ANOTHER death at the hand of AMERICAN police for white people in this country to start talking about white privilege online - because of the ‘SUDDEN’ availability of resources?? No. It’s because of passiveness/passivity.
It’s frustrating to see those who I know would NEVER confront an oppressor if they saw oppression in the street preach about BAME/PoC rights and “how not to be racist” purely for the sake of how THEY look online. It’s not about YOU or how you LOOK...
It’s about protecting innocent lives from harm caused by both direct and INDIRECT racism. Before preaching, EDUCATE YOURSELVES. Don’t come online and act like you’re a saint because you’ve discovered a new phrase - go in DEPTH. Do more reading. Take some ACTION to improve...
The death of George Floyd is not the first. Stop acting surprised. Your “shock” (as a white person in particular) only dilutes the issue. George Floyd is not the first PoC to be murdered due to his “profile”. Your “shock” makes it seem it is unusual when it is not.
Actively remember these people. Remembering one or two names for a week or a month is not enough. I cannot emphasise enough: research. Remind yourselves of others. Learn about the unknown individuals/those who didn’t go viral.
George Floyd is not the first PoC to die this year, month or week. This violence has gone on for CENTURIES. Don’t act like you didn’t know the resources were there to educate yourselves. Don’t act like you didn’t know you could take action and learn to improve the world.
Don’t act like a saviour when all you did was repost a tribute that is reposted by millions worldwide. We can all post a picture of someone and their name. You must LEARN how to make improvements and ally those who are oppressed.
Yes, if you’re in quarantine with at-risk individuals, like myself, you may not be able to join a protest in person, but you CAN further your knowledge, you can support causes online/virtually...
You CAN have a conversation with potentially ignorant people around you - encourage others to educate themselves, teach each other about white privilege and how we, as white people, BENEFIT from the oppression of BAME individuals.
If you aren’t willing to take any action and instead hide behind reposting other people’s tributes, sit tf down and really question why. If it turns out it is just to jump on the social media bandwagon, you’re problematic. Fix it. (See pyrite politics; ‘fools gold’ activism)
Acknowledge if you have a position of privilege in relation the specific issues. Do something with it. Use it for good. Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. ‘Fools gold’ activism provides a shield for oppression to hide. When you say “we must do better”, mean it and DO SOMETHING.
This (thread, rant, whatever you want to call it) has been nowhere near as coherent as I’d like it to be; hasn’t covered anywhere near what I’d like to cover and/or what needs to be covered - I’m aware that I still have much to learn.
Please, if anything, be more mindful about your reasons (or others people’s reasons) for preaching on the internet - you might be doing more harm than good.
