Ok, so this the promised thread of my favorite Napoleonic era uniforms. This list is completely subjective, which is why I really want you all to reply with your favorite uniforms of the era. None of the pictures are mine, but if you see something off make sure to mention it.
I want this thread to be a cool retreat for lovers of the era from some of the awful stuff that's going on in the world. I also want this to be an introduction to a truly fascinating era for the uninitiated. For format I'll be doing at least 4 pictures for each major combatant.
So I'm going to get hussars out of the way immediately. They all look amazing and I want to leave more space for the more unique units of each nation.
1. Russian Lifeguard Hussar
2. French Imperial Guard Chasseur à Cheval
3. Austrian Hussars
4. Prussian Life Hussars (fav hussar)
More (British and Prussian) hussars and the Black Brunswickers, who were basically their own thing and had amazing uniforms, thus their placement here.
1. More Prussian Hussars (bc I can)
2. British 10th "Hussars"
3. Black Brunswicker Hussar
4. Black Brunswicker Infantry
Alright so the army with the best uniforms: the Grande Armée (*ducks to avoid British rifle fire*).
1. French Cuirassiers
2. Grenadiers à Cheval (Basically same uniform as Old Guard hence the Old Guard's exclusion)
3. Marine of the Imperial Guard
4. The Young Guard
The foreign contingents of the Grande Armée:
1. The Mamelukes
2. The Irish Legion
3. The Vistula Legion
4. The Polish Guard Lancers (my favorite cavalry regiment)
I couldn't bring myself to not include them so I'm giving them their own tweet:
1 and 2. The Empress' Dragoons (I mean just look at that leopard skin)
3. The Dutch Guard Lancers (not as cool as the Poles but their uniforms are amazing nonetheless)
4. Swiss line and grenadiers.
Ok on to the British army (which also had amazing uniforms):
1. The 95th Rifles (bc obviously)
2. British Horse Artillery (and early war British light dragoons who also wore the Tarleton helmet)
3. The Highlanders (42nd Black Watch has my favorite tartans)
4. The Dragoon Guards
The Russians (who also had amazing uniforms):
1. Cheavlier Guard (aka cuirassier but make it better somehow)
2. Russian Line Infantry (the Russians might have my favorite line regiment uniform)
3. The Pavlovsk Grenadiers
4. Lifeguard Cossacks (cossacks, but make them fancier)
The Austrians (who have incredibly underrated uniforms):
1. Austrian Cuirassiers
2. Austrian artillerymen
3. Austrian German infantry with helmets (I like the shakos too)
4. Hungarian Grenadiers (I like the German ones too, but I love the blue Hungarian pants on grenadiers)
The Prussians (I personally prefer the post 1806 uniforms):
1. The Prussian Foot Guards
2. The Silesian Schutzen (all Prusian jaegers and light infantry look fantastic)
3. The Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment
4. The Lutzow Freikorps (the black looks great)
The Confederation of the Rhine (for some reason they all have amazing uniforms):
1. Saxon Garde du Corps
2. Wurttemberg Artillerymen
3. Bavarian Infantry (my 2nd favorite line infantry)
4. Wurttemberg Light Infantry
The Spanish (probably the army that it was hardest to find good pictures for and the one I know the least about):
1. Spanish Marine Grenadiers
2. Spanish Sappers
3. Cazadores Voluntarios (1808)
4. Walloon Guards (1808, love the later variant as well)
The Portuguese (another army I don't know too much about):
1. Portuguese Cacadore
2. Portuguese line infantry (very cool uniform)
3. Portuguese light/line cavalry (apparently stationed in Angola)
4. The Portuguese Legion (should be in GA foreign contingents but I don't care).
The Swedish (the labels on these may not be the most accurate, but I couldn't not include these uniforms):
1. Swedish Cuirassier (lifeguard?)
2. Swedish Lifeguard Infantry (only one I'm certain on)
3. Swedish Grenadier (maybe lifeguard?)
4. Swedish Royal Lifeguard Cavalry (?)
And finally, the Danes:
1. Danish Dragoons (those helmets are amazing)
2. Danish horse artillery
3. Danish foot artillery (very similar to normal line infantry but I like the slight variation)
4. Danish grenadiers (quite possibly my favorite grenadiers)
Ok that's it, I hope you guys enjoyed looking through my thread as much as I enjoyed making it. Make sure to leave visuals of your favorite uniforms down below, I really want to see them. Also feel free to follow me for more history and Napoleonic content.
