Ultimately, I've never been able to come up with the right words to talk about this on social media. It should be obvious that murder is murder. Not just in the case of George Floyd, but in the case of every unarmed black person killed in our country. It stretches back years.
It's hard for me to talk about this, because I don't live in the same America as my black friends. When I get pulled over I'm worried about being 10 minutes late to where I'm going, but my friend is worrying about being alive in 10 minutes. It's almost impossible to comprehend.
I don't want my friends to be afraid when they step out their doors each day and until people like Derek Chauvin start getting truly punished for the murders they commit it's not going to change. Arrest them and put them on trial like anyone else would be.
So in the end it comes down to asking myself what I can do to affect change. I'm participating in this system simply by benefiting from the fact that I don't have to worry about being hunted like an animal in my own neighborhood. I'm just an esports caster. What can I do?
I've struggled with that question a lot over the years. I've donated to causes and funds. I've honestly been too scared to go to protests. I think one of the best things to do is listen. Listen and don't try to tell the black community to "calm down and talk about it".
They have every right to scream and yell in the faces of anyone they want to at this point. Why shouldn't that community be angry? We should all be angry. At some point you have to stop worrying about effective communication and acknowledge tragedy and the emotions that follow.
I want to listen to my black friends, read what leaders in their community are saying, and try to understand their America more so that I can see more opportunities in my own life to make things better. I think that's the heart of it, but I'm not qualified to say.
