Important thread: Surrey has been awarded £8.482 million for emergency cycle & walking works. However, looks as if next 4 weeks are going to be vital. If Surrey’s letter is same as attached, then they have 4 weeks to start projects or hand money back.
However, not only will they have to hand that money back but it will impact on ability to get future funding from the rest of the £2bn announced. So council needs to be quick & ambitious or risk losing out on funding for a few years.
It’s clear from the letter, that they believe ‘point closures’ or a low traffic neighbourhood approach are the best way to achieve the maximum effect in a short time. This is very sensible & something we have advocated for with little movement so far.
Have a read of this guide https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/media/3843/lcc021-low-traffic-neighbourhoods-intro-v8.pdf & contact your councillor if you want to see this happen in your area.
Basically, unless the council in the next 4 weeks are able to show that they have the political will to redistribute road space for safe walking & cycling then future money will go to other councils who will.
