Hi friends, one of the ways I’ve been keeping myself occupied during lockdown is watching lots of movies I’ve been meaning to watch for ages, as well as some old favourites. Some people have asked me for recommendations, so I thought I’d start an ongoing thread!
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) one of my all time favourite films and one I know a lot of people are into. Edgar Wright’s best movie in my opinion, I struggle to fault it.
Booksmart (2019) I loved this movie, definitely really made me want to go out afterwards though. Unfairly compared to Superbad imo, it stands on its own without equal.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) the original OG zombie movie with the word “zombie” actually in it. Cult classic, horror classic.
Control (2007) music biopics can be slightly hit and miss, but Control is one of the best. Sam Riley is amazing as Ian Curtis.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) I saw this in the cinema and thought it was just ok. On second viewing though, I’ve got to say that this is one of Tarantino’s best, hands done. It captures a moment in time perfectly.
Bait (2019)
Holy fucking shit. This movie is incredible. 10/10. Best new movie I’ve watched during lockdown. Can’t praise it enough.
The Straight Story (1999)
One of the last Lynch movies I had left to watch, this movie was... surprisingly really moving. Simultaneously incredibly Lynchian and not Lynchian at all.
Until the Light Takes Us (2008)
A couple of friends recommend this to me; a really interesting documentary on the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 90s. Would recommend watching with the lights on.
Frances Ha (2012)
Noah Baumbach makes a damn fine “coming of age in your late 20s” movie, with great performances from Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver.
Taxi Driver (1976)
This one doesn’t need an introduction, it’s a classic and for good reason!
The Master (2012)
Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely nails it - absolutely stunning performance, watch it just for him.
O.J.: Made in America (2016)
This is my second viewing of this 467 minute documentary, and it still blows me away. With recent current events it’s unfortunately still far too relevant, and I would implore anybody, if you have the time, to watch this.
Goodfellas (1990)
Yeah, I watched it. Yeah, it was really good.
Celebration Day (2012)
Took me back to a time when I was obsessed with the band. A damn good concert movie!
Brazil (1985)
A highly depressing movie at times, but one I’ll definitely be revisiting. Feels like a film that you’ll get more out of the more you watch it.
Uncut Gems (2019)
I just finished this movie and it’s incredible. An actual 10/10, and I never thought I’d say that about a Sandler movie after watching Jack & Jill. Intense, stressful, but absolutely flawless.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
A weird movie, but an enjoyable watch with some surprisingly dark moments!
Selma (2014)
A very powerful movie with a fantastic central performance from David Oyelowo.
Meeting People is Easy (1998)
My all time favourite documentary. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this thing - it’s as much an art piece as it is tour diary. Cannot recommend enough.
Little Women (2019)
*violently sobs*
True Grit (2010)
Don’t usually go for Westerns, but very much enjoyed this Coen Brothers movie!
This Is The End (2013)
Kind of thought this movie would just be a generic comedy, but I enjoyed it a lot more than expected. Maybe lockdown is getting to me...
Honey Boy (2019)
Really, really great movie, very emotional. Kind of sucks this movie didn’t get Oscar nominated.
Moonlight (2016)
A modern classic. Go watch it if you haven’t already.
The Shining (1980)
Another favourite of mine, absolutely groundbreaking imo. The book is also great; King and Kubrick tell two versions of the same story.
The Bling Ring (2013)
Right, I know this movie is kind of trash, but I really enjoy it. Emma Watson’s valley girl accent is incredible.
Valkyrie (2008)
I remember going to watch this when I was about 15 and enjoying it after we learnt about it at school. Rewatching it for the first time I thought it might have aged poorly, but actually this is a decent war-thriller movie.
The Witch (2015)
So the first time I watched this movie I was super indifferent to it. On second viewing though I can definitely appreciate it more for what it is. Great cinematography, acting and general atmosphere.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
This movie was so ridiculous but I kind of loved it. Goes without saying that the soundtrack is killer too.
Schindler’s List (1993)
Oh, man.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Oh MAN this film is great. So trippy, so much to read into. Would recommend.
Enter the Dragon (1973)
The film was kitsch as fuck, but fun to watch. Bruce Lee fighting baddies was great, definitely going to check out more of his movies.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
They definitely took some artistic liberties with the source material, but a very entertaining movie nonetheless.
Nosferatu (1922)
A very spooky movie with a fantastic score and cinematography. A must watch for hardcore Horror fans.
The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
A great adaptation and very unlike Armando Iannucci. The cast especially was brilliant!
Beastie Boys Story (2020)
This was wonderful, really broadened my understanding of the band and made me appreciate what they did even more. If you’re a big fan of this band I would definitely recommend.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Really, really great psychological thriller that pays homage to both King and Kubrick‘s versions of The Shining. Will definitely be reading the novel very soon.
Boogie Nights (1997)
I love this movie. It’s even better second time around. The love cast, the soundtrack, the story... it’s all so brilliant. Also an incredibly heartwarming story, even if it is about porn.
Long Shot (2019)
I liked this movie a lot, way more than I thought I would. Genuinely funny and entertaining
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Wow! This movie was bloody great! Perfect movie for both hardcore fans and newbies alike. Really struggling to find a flaw with this film
