The Canucks have major depth problems at forward. Despite having 3 of the top 43 offensive forwards in the league (Pettersson, Boeser, and Miller), the group ranked 19th offensively and defensively. Pettersson and Boeser were also the best defensively. #Canucks
The blueline was even worse, ranking 20th offensively and 29th defensively. Hughes and Stecher were the only above replacement players on it, with Myers and Edler being effective offensively but poor defensively and Benn being bad at both ends. #Canucks
So how did this team make the playoffs? Aside from the spectacular top line and an arguably Hart-contending season from #40, coaching isolates suggest that Travis Green's system was top 10 both defensively and offensively. #Canucks
From a salary cap perspective, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes' ELCs do a lot of heavy lifting on providing the team with surplus. Myers and Edler are big anchors and there are plenty of overpaid depth players in the forward group (Beagle, Sutter, Pearson) #Canucks
Overall, in my opinion this team is a few years away from seriously contending. The hardest part of the rebuild is over: Pettersson is one of the league's best players, Hughes is great, and Boeser and Miller are very good top liners. But this group is shallow. #Canucks
They're not a regression candidate in terms of PDO, but they relied so hard on that top line and PP - and I don't think we can really expect either of those to improve much going forward. They have some major issues to address and not much flexibility to do that with. #Canucks
