The people who are outraged over the looting appear to have a very narrow view of the situation going on. They’re not looting purely because of George Floyd’s death (although that is certainly a factor). They are looting to take a stance on a broader issue. (1/5)
That broader issue is the wide swathe of socioeconomic injustices that have kept massive portions of the population oppressed since the founding of this country. Over 40 million people live in poverty in this country while the wealthy keep getting wealthier. (2/5)
The public execution of George Floyd by those police officers served as a spark in a room that has been slowly filled with gasoline over the past several decades, and it was only a matter of time before those who have been oppressed finally fought back. (3/5)
While they certainly deal with disproportionate amounts of police violence, they also deal with issues such as weaker safety nets, considerably lower wages, systematic oppression via the prison industrial complex, and geographical segregation - just to name a few. (4/5)
Sorry for ranting, but I’m tired of seeing people take such a one-dimensional view on this issue. When you understand the contributing factors on a wild scale, it’s easy to understand why they’re reacting in this way. Besides,I’m sure that those massive corporations will be fine.
