making a thread of some things u can do to help fight white supremacy and racism in ur town/community because i’ve learned a lot over the past few hours and it might be useful if u dont know where to start #BlackLivesMatter https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💗" title="Growing heart" aria-label="Emoji: Growing heart">
1. when a poc encounters racism in ur town and the incident is shared through social media, contact the organisation/company where the incident happened to express how upset you are that they failed to protect a poc during the event. encourage ur family + friends to do the same
2. support black businesses!! the median wealth for white families in the USA is around 12 times higher than that of black families and by supporting black-owned businesses, both local ones and larger corporations, you can help to close the racial wealth gap. you can find +
3. don’t buy from companies that utilize prison labour. this is basically modern american slavery disguised as ‘punishment for crimes’ and is used by thousands of major corporations. some examples of these are Walmart, Microsoft and Starbucks, however u can find a larger list
4. find out how black history is being taught in your local schools. sadly the national curriculum skips over major parts of history, therefore it’s important to advocate for history to be taught correctly, including teaching about black scientists, explorers and politicians etc.
furthermore, the majority of schools fail to teach about the reality of slavery which has huge repercussions. you can write to the department of education here: https://www.gov.uk/contact-dfe ">https://www.gov.uk/contact-d...
5. attend anti-white supremacy protests and marches against racism in ur local area, and encourage your family and friends to do the same. you can find these through websites such as: http://eventbrite.com"> http://eventbrite.com
6. donate books that feature poc as protagonists or heroes to local schools, regardless of theirnracial make-up. you can find lots of lists on google however this one is a good place to start: http://grassrootscommunityfoundation.org/1000-black-girl-books-resource-guide/">https://grassrootscommunityfoundation.org/1000-blac...
7. this kind of ties in with the last point but support black authors! they have been the voices of their generations and will continue to inspire the generations following them. Octavia Butler, Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison are just three examples of black authors that have +
8. write to local schools to advocate for the recruitment of black educators. for more information on why this is so important you can listen to this episode of Malcom Gladwell’s podcast: http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/13-miss-buchanans-period-of-adjustment">https://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/...
9. this is an obvious one but signing petitions is a really effective way to help advocate for justice and change and it takes only a few minutes of ur time. you can find some here: http://blmpetitions.carrd.co"> http://blmpetitions.carrd.co  and http://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co"> http://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co
