I& #39;ve been doing some research, and here& #39;s a few things I have learned

In America, people awaiting trial can be required to pay money so they can go home until their trial begins. This is called cash bail. For poor people, particularly people of colour, this means that they are sent to jail before they are even convicted just because they are poor.
According to an article on Time
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="➡️" title="Rightwards arrow" aria-label="Emoji: Rightwards arrow">In some places, including Louisiana, the police officer who carried out the arrest, the judge, the prosecutor & the public defender all get a % cut of the money if the person is able to pay. (Bit dodgy, right?) https://time.com/5749542/cash-bail-impact/">https://time.com/5749542/c...
The judge has more incentive to ask a person to pay bail, because they& #39;ll get to keep a proportion of the money.
The Minnesota Freedom Fund calculated that around 60% of people accused of minor crimes were asked to pay cash bail. https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/bailbondfaq ">https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/bailbondf...

In California, over 63% of people in jail have not been convicted. Some of those people are held because they& #39;re suspected of committing a serious crime, but many are there because they could not afford to pay bail. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/apr/29/california-bail-jails-coronavirus-criminal-justice">https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2...
According to a study by the Stanford University Open Policing Project
https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="➡️" title="Rightwards arrow" aria-label="Emoji: Rightwards arrow"> black Americans are more likely to be stopped, searched, ticketed and arrested in almost all states investigated in the study. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2018/04/the-stop-race-police-traffic/">https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/...
I& #39;ll probably add more to this thread once I do more research. If you have time, please do research yourself too, it& #39;s important we understand these issues if we want to make change.
